ASZK Annual Conference 2008 - 23-25 May 2008 - registrations close Monday 18 May
 
Theme: "Sustainable Zookeeping - looking to the future"
 
The ASZK 2008 conference will be held 23 - 25 May at the Sydney Academy of Sports Narrabeen and is hosted by Sydney Wildlife World, Featherdale Wildlife Park and Symbio Wildlife Park. The conference costs will include comfortable share accommodation on site as well as all meals and events. Click here to download an information and registration brochure.
 
We have a great variety of papers covering primates, elephants, rhinos, macropods, birds, dasyurids as well as enrichment and other collection management areas.
Workshops include Dasyurid management, Wildlife rehabilitation, Environmental Enrichment and Keepr presentations.
Tours will include Sydney Wildlife World, Sydney Aquarium and Featherdale Wildlife Park.

ASZK Bird Keeper Development Workshop - 21 - 23 May 2008 - NOW FULL - no more places left!
 
ASZK will be holding a bird keeper development workshop 21-23 May 2008 in Sydney. Running just prior to the ASZK Conference it will be limited to 15 places only.
The program has a variety of speakers who are amongst the top professionals in bird keeping in zoos and wildlife parks in Australia.
Places are limited to 15 only on a first come first in basis.
 
This now full - ASZK will look at running more in the future.
 
ASZK Macropod Workshop 26 May 2008 - Now Full
A one day macropod workshop for keepers will be held on Monday 26 May 2008 in Sydney.
The program is a comprehensive overview of topics relevant to keepers working with macropods and will include a session on capture and restraint as well as transportation.
It will be held at Rooty Hill RSL training room followed by a session later in the day at Featherdale Wildlife Park.
Speakers include Carla Srb Monotreme & Marsupial TAG convenor, Bev Drake from WORZ, Evan Harris from Featherdale Wildlife Park, Michael Cannon from Sydney University/Wollongog Vet Clinic and Jocelyn Hockley from Healesville Sanctuary.
This workshop is limited to 15 only on a first come first in basis.

Bowling for Cassowary 2008
 
ASZK has selected Cassowary as the species for our annual fundraising event for 2008. Bowling was held in the last week of March 2008.

Bowling for Cassowary Results on fundraising to date:
 
Taronga Western Plains Zoo Dubbo - $2400 plus another $660 worth of t-shirts sold! great effort!!
 
Sydney area (Sydney Wildlife World, Taronga Zoo, Australian Museum , Symbio Wildlife Gardens, Featherdale Wildlife Park) - $1063 raised on the night through bowling and raffles.  Many t-shirts were also sold but total not available. Another great effort!
 
Melbourne Zoo - Just under $1000 - about 60 bowled - fantastic.
 
Perth Zoo - We had a good turnout of 40 lawn-bowlers at the South Perth Bowling Club, for the annual event. With some generous donations of raffle prizes (thankyou to Perth Zoo, Zoonique, GT Glass, Painted Dog Conservation, Armadale Reptile Centre, Zoo Peru and Perth Zoo Docents), we raised close to $1000 for Cassowary Conservation. - Belinda Turner

ASZK Annual Awards for 2008 - call for nominations
 
The Annual Awards have the following categories. Nominations covering the period 1 January 2007-31December 2007 will close 31 January 2008.Nominations now closed. Nominations for 2009 will open in December 2008.
 
1. Institutional Award for significant achievement by an institution or group of people within an institution. This can cover new or renovated exhibits, conservation, enrichment, conditioning, education or training programs.
 
2. Heidi Hellingman Award for Individual Achievement. This award is open only to current ASZK members and is for achievement by a single individual.
 
3. Hall of Fame Award. This award is for recognition of a life time contribution to zookeeping. This award recipient will gain life time membership of ASZK.
