About the event
The California condor (Gymnogyps californianus) is a huge, scavenging bird of western North America that can weigh 9-11 kg. Its range is much less than it was before the arrival of humans to the continent. The decline of the California condor was driven by human activities, habitat loss, and lead poisoning. In 1982, only 22 California condors remained in the wild, prompting wildlife officials to bring the remaining population into human care by 1987. Breeding and recovery programs have since expanded the population to 607 birds, with about 2/3rds of them out there flying free. Lead poisoning remains the major ongoing threat for these birds. Microtrash ingestion, and, more recently, HPAI H5N1 have led to the death of free-flying birds as well.
The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council will allocated (1) AVNAT CPD points/s to this continuing education activity.
